Thomas Tuchel finally has the formidable star he required to turn Chelsea into Premier League title challengers
Jurgen Klopp was done signing squad fillers ahead of his third season at Liverpool. That strategy wasn't going to bridge the gap to those at the top of the Premier League, it wasn't going to transform the Reds into title challengers.
What he needed was the best, no matter the cost. And so came the club's pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, which was as subtle as a punch in the jaw.
Liverpool went hard to secure the Dutchman's signing ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City. Klopp met van Dijk in a hotel in Blackpool to discuss a switch to Anfield. Terms were then agreed with the defender.
There was one problem, however: Liverpool hadn't made an official approach to Southampton for the centre-back's services.
